Thank you to everyone who came along to the Nechells Awards and Planning event in March. It was great to see so many different people from all parts of the ward coming together to share what they do, and make links with each other.

Nechells Community First aims to build on this success, and to organise regular network meetings, starting in June to help groups and active citizens continue to make links.

Cheaper Energy: Together

With one in two families in Nechells struggling to pay fuel bills, collective buying of gas and electricity promises cheaper bills by residents clubbing together. The Birmingham & Solihull Together scheme is open to everyone in Nechells and – if you have your most recent gas and electric bills handy – it’s easy to check how much you can save. Residents have until 17 March to join up and take advantage of lower energy prices.

The scheme backed by Birmingham City Council and others is working with Nechells Community First to promote the opportunity of cheaper bills by acting together to residents. A scheme run along similar lines in Cornwall last year saw people save an average of £133 per year.

Birmingham and Solihull Together director Rokneddin Shariat explained: “As a country we waste a staggering £4 billion a year on energy – because so many of us are paying a higher tariff than we need. A shocking 32% of the British public say they now find energy unaffordable – and 90% of households say being able to pay their gas and electricity bills is their biggest worry.

“The thinking behind this scheme is that by acting as a community rather than as individuals we’ll get a better deal overall.”

The campaign has a longer term vision to help communities share resources, club together to save money on other products and services and support the local economy. 7th March 2013 6-8pm at St Alban’s Academy, Highgate

We’re looking for people who live, work or run a business locally and who want to make our bit of Birmingham a better place to be.

We’re organising a community awards and planning evening on the 7th March, where you can:

Find out about small grants for local groups
Meet other local group and discuss priorities
Enjoy refreshments from Change Kitchen
Book in advance for a chance to win a £50 cash prize in a raffle

You will also be able to vote on the night on £250 awards for community projects, as long as you have registered your details in advance.

Fund closed to new applications

Nechells Community First is now closed to new applications, until 2013. The panel will be developing new priorities for 2013-2015, and will publish these by April 2013, together with details of how to get involved / access funding.
